Anti Terrace

Project Description

Additions and alterations to an existing house used historically as administrative quarters for the neighbouring public housing. The dwelling’s orientation contrasts the single-fronted workers’ terraces that mark the general streetscape, providing opportunities for a sunny north-facing front garden, hence the project’s nickname. The project challenges the traditional entry threshold by disguising the ‘front door’ amidst a series of custom fabricated steel and glass bi-fold panels. Together these form an adaptable front façade that the family manipulates through the seasons, depending on whether a cool spring breeze or filtered winter sun is in order. Anti-Terrace celebrates simple, cost efficient materials, subtle colour and as many pockets of natural light as we could feasibly include, in order to transform this ageing managerial building into a compact, high functioning family home.
